The War of The Worlds Blog 5

In the book “The War of The Worlds” by H.G. Wells the turning point is quite obvious. In most cases the turning point comes somewhere in the middle or later half of the book. However, in this case it comes almost at the beginning. The climax(or turning point) is of course when the cylinders with martians crash down on earth. Well, maybe not right when they arrive, but rather when they build their tripods. This changes everything and all of the following things revolve around it.

The british people try to manage this by sending all of their armies to fight the huge martian tripods. This does almost nothing since the heat-rays of the martians kill them instantly. However, they do manage to take down a couple of tripods and slow some of them down quite a bit.

The way this is solved is probably the most lucky and boring way I could have ever imagined. After hiding for a long time the narrator awakes to find that every single martian is dead. This comes as a huge surprise, because nothing seemed to stop them. You later find out that they died because of a bacteria, how ironic. You’d think that intelligent beings who invade another planet would check and make sure they wouldn’t just die of some random bacteria.

I hoped that the people of earth would have come up with some smart and clever way to defeat the martians, rather than just being lucky. There could have been so much more to read and it would have been much more interesting for the reader.
