"The Road" Blog 2

I have now read one third of the book and based on that I can tell that there only are two characters. The characters are the father, who is driven by an unconditional love for his son, and the boy, who is his father’s only hope of salvation. The man is in his late 40’s and the boy is about 10. Both unnamed. The man’s whole life (and his part of the story) is about to help his son, he want him to survive and to accomplish that the man has to protect his son from the ”new” world’s horrors. To make his son keep walking and not think that they are the bad guys he often tell him that they are ”carrying the fire”, the fire in this sentence is another word for the flame of humanity which is left alive inside their hearts.

McCarthy describes the man and his son in a very special way, although he does not write how they look. McCarthy is giving the readers a picture of them when he describes the circumstances in which they live in. I think they are wearing grey clothes which soon will become rags. I believe that because McCarthy writes that they are freezing when the night is coming and its dark outside.
