"The Road" Blog 1

”The Road”, written by Cormac McCarthy, is a book about a father and his son who are trying to survive an apocalypse. Only by reading the first page of the book I found myself compelled to read the entire book.  I got that feeling because of my previous experiences of apocalypse books and movies.

McCarthy begins the book by putting the reader in the middle of the apocalypse. In the first sentence the main character (in this case the dad) wakes up in the middle of the night. McCarthy does not explain what has happened to the world, but in the way he describe the surroundings I understood that an apocalypse had been taken place. There were no colours left in the world, the days got more grey each one than what had gone before. I really like the way McCarthy started the book, I thinks it’s good that the readers are thrown directly in the plot. In this way the reader can imagine by himself what had happened with the world.

The name of the book does not reveal very much about the plot, the only thing in the plot that you can relate to the name ”The Road” is that the two main characters are going to follow the road until they get to the sea in south.

The book isn't divided into chapters and the first few pages described the surroundings very detailed, therefore I experience it to be quite lengthy. The author starts with the sentence ”When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he´d reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him”. I think this sentence is very describing and therefore I think the rest of the book will be similar.
