A thousand splendid suns - Third blog post
Given the fact that the war against the Soviet and the weak livingstandards of the main characters are what makes the book so intence and grasping, I don't think that the environment could have been any better. The difference between the rich individuals houses with amazing detail to the poor and war-affected zones where the streets are made of dry sand and the houses fall to pieces. I like that you get to see both parts.
Despite the increasing matter of war in Afghanistan, many characters refuse to leave due to their connection to their home. This is what I think really makes the environment so special for this book. Hosseini's way to, at times, make the mood so tragic, filled with despair, and very sad makes the hard struggle of the two women even more impressive.
I think that the environment of A Thousand Splendid Suns is really hard to describe, just becaus of the fact that Hosseini is so good at doing it himself. In just a sentance he can create a world with detailed houses, a mood that makes you sad for a day and then fill that world with the feelings and thoughts of all the people who live there.
