This book have so many characters but for me the most important characters for the whole book are Mariam,Laila and Rasheed.  

Mariam is the daughter of Nana and Jalil. Her mother met Jalil when she worked for him in his house,but when nana became pregnant they just wanted her to disappear so Jalil lead them to a hut outside Herat where they were supposed to live their whole life. Jalil had three wives and nine children but all of them were strangers to Mariam because he only came to the hut every week to see Mariam , she had never been in his home or in the city Herat. One day she left her home to see her father and when she reached his house they said he weren't their so they drove her home but when they arrived they found her mother in a tree with a rope around her neck. 

All Jalils family wanted was to get rid of Mariam so after some days they forced her to marry Rasheed who was a thirty year older man. She moved to Kabul where he lived and at first Rasheed was kind and understanding but  he soon turned out to be a very stern and spiteful man.

Laila is the other main character and she appears in the middle of the book and then you follow her to the end. Laila is the daughter of Hakim and Fariba and she had two brothers but they were both killed in the war against the Soviet. She is in love with her friend Tariq but sadly she had to become Rasheed’s wife to.
