I think it's really good that Hosseini bring this up because this way of thinking are something that are still active in some parts of the world.
Then Mariam have to deal with an internal conflict when her father Jalil tells her that she have to marry the much older man Rasheed. She never thought that her father would do this to her because she really loved her father and she saw him as a pure hearted man.
When she move to Rasheed an external conflict starts to begin , he abused her and when she got a miscarriage he started to hit her and he treat her very bad. Then he married Laila to and she had been through a lot of conflict her self before the unfortunate marriage with Rasheed.
