A thousand splendid suns - First blog post

Khaled Hosseini, the famous author of The Kite Runner starts of his newer book A Thousand Splendid Suns by introducing the reader to the main character Mariam. In just a few sentances Hosseini has brought the Afghan woman to life by creating a scenario. Mariam is being yelled at for breaking a tea set that belongs to her mother Nana, that calls her a harami for being so clumsy. This is Hosseini's smart draw to really make you look forward to the next page, making you want to find out more about the characters lifes and understanding the the words of the local people. It really makes you stand on your toes when a word passivly goes by in the text that is not written in english, and I love it.

A few pages into the book, still not connecting the title of the book to the text I'm reading, Hosseini's writing style really starts to influence the story. The way he makes you feel like you actually were the character by making you one with it. You never really understand more than what the main character does, as I mentioned with the word Harami. Now you also start to see a pattern, a learning curve. You follow the start of something new, you learn with Mariam and experience new things like you were actually there. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this will evolve in later chapters!
