a thousand Splendid Suns 5

I would say that there is two or maybe three turning points in this story.

The first turning point is on Miriam’s birthday when she goes to meet Jalil on her own and later finds out that her mother have committed suecide. This leads to the marrige between her and Rasheed who is old enough to be her father. This turning point is awful, but it’s crucial for the story.

The biggest turning point of the novel is when Miriam murders Rasheed. Miriam is arrested for murdering Rasheed and is executed in the stadium in front of a lot of people. Laila escapes Kabul and goes to Pakistan with her one true love Tariq and her children. She eventually returns, first stopping in Herat to see the place where Miriam grew up, and then returning to Kabul to create a better home and a new school for her children and the children of orphanage.

I don’t really know what I think about this turning point, of course it’s really sad that Miriam gets executed, but on the other hand this meant that Laila and her children could live in peace, away from Rasheed, which was the only thing that mattered to Miriam. Miriam lived for these three people and she also died for them, so according to me she didn’t die for nothing.
