A thousand Splendid Suns 4
The book is set during the soviet war, but since the plot does not revolve around the war especially much I wouldn’t really count it as a external conflict in the book. I would say that the biggest external conflict in the book is the conflict between the woman and men.
The Afghanistan women live in a world totally dominated by men. The women are oppressed and get married against their will to older men who treat them like shit and they have no say on the matter. This subject gets extra sensitive since in many parts of the world, this is how women gets treated.
I would say that there is two big internal conflicts in the book. One is between Miriam and her father. After he betrayed her and married her off against her will so she lost all confidence in him. The other one is between Laila, Miriam and Rasheed. Rasheed was abusive toward Miriam in the beginning of their marriage. Once Laila was married to Rasheed, and Rasheed now was married to both Laila and Miriam, he became even worse.
