The enviroment in this story is one of the crucial factors that make the book so amazing. It's clear that Hussaini has put a lot of time on just the description of the environment and the community because it is excellently done.
The book is set during the Soviet war in Afghanistan and describes a troubled environment where you never go safe. It’s an unjust world where some people live in big beautiful houses, while some have no home at all and struggle to manage through the day.
In the beginning of the book Miriam lives in a peaceful enviroment in a ”Kolba” along with her mother. It’s only walking distance to the, according the Hosseini, beautiful city Herat. Later when Miriam marries Rashid she has to move to Kabul that's loud and lively comparing to Herat.
It’s very hard to describe the enviroment i this book. You can’t really understand what it is like until you’ve read the book yourself. Hosseni conveys such a special feeling in his enviroment description that I can't pass on.
