A Thousand Splendid Suns 2

I’ve now finished the book, and would say that there are four people who have a crucial role and which reappears throughout the book. These people are the main charachter Miriam, the young Laila, Tariq Laila’s one true love, Rasheed the curel man who’s married to Miriam and Laila and Jalil Miriam’s father.

Miriam was born illegitimately and is the child of a rich man, Jalil, and a housekeeper. She tries to force her father to acknowledge her as his daughter, but it leads to the heartache of her mother’s Nana suicide and her own arranged marriage to the much older man Rasheed. Miriam is a is a quiet, thoughtful child at the start of the book but during her long marriage to Rasheed, Mariam's inability to have children turns her into a resentful, bitter, and fearful woman.

Laila is a beautiful young girl with long hair born and raised by a modern Islamic family. She’s was a pretty happy girl until her parents got killed by a Mujahideen rocket. At this point she was six weeks pregnant to Tariq, her true love that she believes got killed. She decides to marry Rasheed and becomes a part of a home where she is abused and where she carries on a lie that her daughter is Rasheed’s. Later she finds out that Tariq is a life and escapes the country with him and her two children.

Rasheed is a huge old man who owns a shoe repair shop and is Miriams and Lailas husband. His past is a bit troubled since his wife and son are both dead. Rasheed has a very hot temer and has high hopes for having a son. He’s an evil man and abuse is part of his daily life

Jalil is Mariams rich father and a movie theater owner who lives in Herat with his four wives. In the beginning Miriam adore him, and thinks he’s the best father in the world, but later she realise that she’s just a shame for him and his family. When her mother died he gave her up to marry Rasheed. Later on he regrets his harsh treatment of Maryam and tries to contact her to apologize.
