A Thousand Splendid Suns 1
A Thousand Splendid Suns was released on May 22, 2007 and is a novel written by the Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini (same author who wrote the famous novel ”The Kite Runner”).
The author starts the story very traditionally with describing the main character, Miriam’s, life at the time and a couple of years back. You get to know Miriam very well and the persons around her. The book may not be especially capturing in the beginning, but to this kind of book, I don’t consider it that important to get super ”captured” straight away, I rather get to know the characters first. So far, the title ”A Thousand Splendid Suns” has nothing to do with contents.
The first few sentences doesn’t really give me a special feeling, but I do understand that the main character Miriam isn’t happy. On the second page her mother calls her ”harami” which means ”bastard”, only because she was a bit clumsy and happened to drop the tea set. The first few pages makes me realize that the book will be sad and tragic but at the same time very interesting, and it turned out that I was right about that.
